Introduction
Encouraging and developing public speaking and presentation skills in young people has always been a priority for the Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland(RIBI) organisation.
We are delighted to see that our schools support our beliefs. Their enthusiasm and increasing participation has seen the annual Rotary ‘Youth Speaks’ competition go from strength to strength since its inception. Each year sees the competition produce even more gifted public speakers from within our secondary school aged young people.
The competition is open to teams of pupils from every secondary school in the UK. Teams comprising of pupils aged between eleven and thirteen (as at 31/08/09) compete in the Intermediate category while their older counterparts, aged between fourteen and seventeen (as at 31/08/09), compete in the Seniors category.
The competition formally starts at district level with the winners of each category progressing to their local regional final. Winners of each regional final have the distinction of representing their region in the national finals, due to be in held in Stratford-upon-Avon in May 2010.
Based on the fact that there are scheduled to be twenty nine district finals with at least eight teams reaching this stage in each age category, it is estimated that upto a staggering 2000 teams may actually have applied for the competition, the number being narrowed down at the club or area level, prior to reaching the formal start of the competition at district level.
The quality of the speakers is consistently fantastic and if you get the chance to attend any of the competition events, we guarantee you will not fail to be impressed by the talent and courage of our young people.
If you know of any young people in your school or youth group outside the West London area who would be ideally suited to and would welcome this challenge, please do encourage them to participate in this event. The ‘Find a club’ button at the top will help you locate your local Rotary club, who will be very happy to supply you with further details of this competition.
What we’d like you to do
If you have any connections with secondary school pupils in the West London area, here’s what we’d like you to do
- Advertise the competion to teachers, students and parents. The more participants the better.
- Run internal competions within your school. We want the best your school has to offer.
- Help your teams by coaching them to speak clearly, avoid reading notes and above all pick inspiring subjects
- Let us know about your intention to participate. Yes, we cannot escape the admin.
- Keep us informed of your progress, or lack of. Well, we want to know you have few teams, and really good ones.
- Plan to win (of course). Nothing to add.
How to apply
You should register your school as soon as possible, and there is no need for you to know your complete team to do so.
